I am a first-time homebuyer and owner-occupant who purchased a two-unit property in Detroit at 22 years old through the Detroit Down Payment Assistance Program. I currently live in the upper unit while renting the first-floor unit, giving me firsthand experience with the responsibilities of being both a homeowner and a landlord. My experience includes preparing a rental unit for a tenant, understanding tenant needs, creating property guidelines, coordinating security measures, and learning about rental requirements and Section 8 housing. I have also gained experience managing property-related responsibilities, including maintenance planning, renovations, budgeting, and improving the safety and appearance of the property. As a young homeowner, I have learned how important communication, organization, financial responsibility, and problem-solving are in rental property management. My goal is to continue expanding my knowledge and experience in real estate and eventually grow my rental property portfolio while providing safe, well-maintained, and affordable housing to tenants.
