Dallas City Council Bans Short Term Rentals (STRs)
After four hours of testimony, the Dallas City Council voted to ban short-term rentals (STR) from neighborhoods with single-family homes.
Owners of STRs argue that limiting the rentals will lead to financial hardships, while residents argue that these properties often feel like, “party houses,” and believe the neighborhoods should focus on long-term residents.
What will happen with short term rentals in Dallas?
The council has determined that STRs will be allowed in multi-family residential areas and commercial areas, but with new restrictions. These rentals will be allowed in multi-family residential areas with over 20 units, however, only 3% of the units in these areas can be used as STRs. In addition, owners of STRs must register with the city each year, pay taxes and fees similar to hotels, follow noise regulations, and limit occupants to 12. This enforcement will begin in December of this year.
